Bardejov
An exceptionally beautiful well-preserved medieval town with fortifications located in northeast Slovakia. The oldest written record of Bardejov is from the year 1241.
Town Hall Square and its side streets comprise the city centre. The square is surrounded on three sides by merchant houses with the characteristics of Gothic and Renaissance architecture. In the middle of the square is the Town Hall, construction of which started under the master Alexander in 1505.
The Bardejov Town Hall
This Gothic-Renaissance building, built between 1505 and 1509, was the seat of the Town Council.
There are stone sculptures lining the entire perimeter of the town hall, and a small curiosity under the roof of the Renaissance oriel. One night, one of the artisans installed a sculpture of a boy sticking out his bare buttocks towards the magistrate’s house in retaliation for the City Council’s late payment for his work.
Basilica of St Giles
“Basilica of St Giles.
The 13th-century Basilica of St Giles is located on the northern side of the Town Hall Square. It is the most precious of the medieval buildings. With its eleven Gothic winged altarpieces with panel paintings, it is a unique European treasure.
